Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a technique used to treat spider and varicose veins. The procedure is a safe and effective way to treat spider veins, reticular veins, and small varicose veins. Larger veins may require surgical or other treatment.
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a 'sclerosing agent' (typically hypertonic saline) into the varicose vein. This then causes mild inflammation within the walls of the vein, and over time, the vein shuts down and is eventually resorbed by the body. Treatment sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes which depends upon the number and extent of the veins treated. In addition, more than one treatment session may be required depending upon the number and extent of the veins present.
Many factors influence the efficacy of this therapy including the patient's lifestyle, body weight, and level of physical activity. Dr. Edwards only treats a patient after conducting a thorough history and physical examination and determines the patient to be an appropriate candidate for treatment. Individual results may vary, and discussion of potential side effects are both discussed and provided in writing to the patient prior to treatment.
