Why balance hormones?

Men and women reach their peak hormone levels at age 35. Thereafter, all hormones begin to gradually decline with age. As your glands age, they produce lower levels of hormones. The following terms describe "normal" age related decline in gland function. All of these conditions are considered to be a normal part of the aging process:

Thyropause: Decline in thyroid hormone levels

Menopause: Decline in female sex hormone levels (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone)

Andropause: Decline in male sex hormone levels (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone)

Adrenopause: Decline in the adrenal gland hormone DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone)

The rate and degree of age related hormonal decline is directly affected by our level of stress, our nutritional intake, the amount we exercise, and our sleep patterns.

Thanks to advances in modern medicine, our life expectancies have risen dramatically and now tops nearly 80 years. As such, we can expect to live longer. The concept behind hormonal restoration is to restore health so we live those years disease free while enjoying vitality and an overall sense of well being. The goal is to restore hormone levels to a more youthful state when internal physiology functioned at optimal levels.

Another key aspect of hormone restoration is disease treatment and prevention. All of our hormones are produced and act in direct correlation with each other. In men and women, the estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, DHEA, and growth hormone, just to name a few, are members of a hormone family. All members of this family need to communicate and be present in optimal levels in order for balance and harmony to be achieved.

There are thousands of medical journals documenting the efficacy of hormone restoration for many disease states including:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Mood disorders
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Dementia

Dr. Edwards reviews the medical literature on an ongoing basis and utilizes an evidence based approach to diagnose and treat patients with hormonal imbalances.
